Outovercott Riding Stables

Come and enjoy our beautiful area of the Exmoor National Park.

Riding can be one of the most enjoyable ways of seeing our part of Exmoor and the coast. We offer horses and ponies to suit all ages and abilities with little or no roadwork - from a gentle one hour ride to longer rides for the more experienced rider. In high season, you may well have to book your ride a few days in advance.

If you have never ridden before, try an easier one-hour ride first, instruction is given whilst on the ride. The hour ride follows the river and then up through the woods and along the course of the old Lynton - Barnstaple narrow gauge railway line. The chances are you will discover muscles you never knew existed but the experience may tempt you to improve your riding with further lessons. Like any sport, the more competent you become, the more you enjoy it.

For the intermediate rider we can offer a scenic coastal ride taking in views of the Valley of Rocks, Lee Abbey and the spectacular Exmoor coastline, with its famous hog's back wooded cliffs. And for the more experienced rider we can offer various routes on the open moor involving more challenging, faster, riding. All our rides are escorted.

Qualified instruction is available. Our riders are welcome to help with the horses in the stables if they wish, under supervision. Skull caps to BSI standard are provided, and all riders are required to wear protective head wear.

The stables are Association of British Riding Schools Approved.  Charges for riding: £20.00 per hour

Once booked, please ensure you honour the booking or, at least, telephone the evening before to cancel. Otherwise, horses have been unnecessarily groomed and tacked up ready for you. Wear sensible clothing and walking shoes or wellington boots. Always make a note of the time of the ride and arrange to be there a few minutes early in order to be fitted with a riding hat and matched with a suitable horse or pony.

We can offer self-catering holidays in either our fully modernised 16th century cottages situated in a sheltered Exmoor valley beside a trout stream, or a bungalow with beautiful uninterrupted panoramic moorland views, which are situated on our working sheep farm.
